716 - A wonderful announcement: God loves us!

11-Mar-2018 - Fourth Sunday of Lent
Word of God
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. Jn 3,16-21
Today’s passage enables us to reflect on the substance of God: "God is love" (1Jn 4,8). God was love even before the creation of the world. He was, and is, love between the Father and the Son with such an infinite intensity, that it constitutes the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. In that creative love, we were already conceived: "he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world" (Eph 1,4). Love, however, needs to create in order to love and be loved outside itself, it cannot be inactive: so God has made his love concrete through creation. Human love, too, always needs to be implemented in a project: a love that does not create something great is not love. As the man, the most advanced creation of God’s love, lost himself in sin following the freedom he had received, God made himself a man too and – as today's Gospel announces - "so loved the world that he gave his only Son". God came down to Earth to set us free from sin and to teach us to love even to the point of offering our lives for love, as he did on the cross. From that love embodied in our human reality the Church was born, in which God’s love is constantly pouring in the person of the Holy Spirit: "The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us"(Rom 5,5). Besides the Church, the human reality in which this wonderful story of God's love is reflected clearly is the family. Inside the very family, the love between the spouses needs to become concrete in a project of life to be worked out together, of which the greatest, but not the only, event is procreation. In the family, the parents are called to give their life and teach their children to love, sharing the daily bread, educating them and helping them in their development, and going to look for them every time got lost along the streets of the world, , as God has done in the history of salvation. The love that God has poured into our hearts does not take place only in the family, but in every social context: "If God so loved us, we also must love one another" (1Jn 4,11). However, the gym where this universal love takes form, grows and develops is the family. Let us become aware of this great privilege which we have been entrusted with.
